Humanities

Rough Draft of Writing

Beaches in San Diego are overall very good compared to other places in the country. We have many places that attract tourism and have lower pollution levels allowing fewer cases of infections and other bacteria causing ailments. Mission Beach, which is a very popular beach in San Diego, is number 3 on the beach grading system I made based off of water pollution, tourism and overall beach cleanliness.

Water pollution is a big issue in coastal cities. It causes illnesses starting from nose and ear infections to upper respiratory problems. All though most of the time these things are minor they are a hassle and take away from the overall experience of going to a San Diego beach. Mission Beach has very good pollution levels all year round. Even after it rained it still had exceptional ratings compared to other beaches in the country and San Diego. A website called Heal the Bay gave Mission Bay an A the whole year. As well as data from Heal the Bay, tests that we have done in class has shown that Mission Bay has miniscule amount of water pollutants such as Total Coliforms, E Coli and Enterococci which are two main bacteria. Although water pollution is a big part of the beach grading scale, it is not the only thing.

We then look at tourism, which basically rates money generated by shops and the overall attraction this beach has compared to others. Mission Bay has an area called Belmont Park that has an arcade, food, a rollercoaster and a few other carnival rides and this attracts a lot of tourists and kids who want to have a fun day of beach fun and rides. As well as having the all those things, there are huge amount of stores varying from beach clothes to formal clothing allowing people to shop after having fun on the rollercoaster. Even though it has all these fun activities to do, there are a lot of places you can rent out so you can go to sleep with a beautiful view of the ocean and wake up to the sound of the waves.

Lastly, we have beach cleanliness. Beach cleanliness is the amount of litter and trash that is left on the beach, which affects the overall beauty that the beach has to offer. There are signs all over the place and police officers that drive along the beach that stop people from having glass, alcoholic beverages and stop littering as much as possible because it is against the law and is a nuisance to other beach goers. These rules and the people that enforce them allow Mission Beach to stay clean letting tourists and locals to have fun in the sun without having to worry on stepping on anything.

This beach is filled with many activities and a great place for tourists and locals to visit. It has so many different things to do; you will be entertained from the time you get there to the minute you leave. Overall, it is the cleanliness; lack of water pollution and tourist attractions that give me the pleasure of making it number 3 on my top beaches in San Diego list.

Paragraphs

This is one of my essays, this essay is a draft of my work which is something i feel i did really well on. I tryed so ahrd to amke sure my writting was the best ic ould make it and that included making a lot of drafts since personally i find my writting less and adequate, if i used other people as my way of genreating ideas to make my writtng better i will come out with a better end product.

I did this by making sure i had everything ready to be critiqued by my teachers and peers so that things will be 100 percent in my eyes before they are graded harshly by my peers showing spelling corrections that had to mbe made clarity in sentences and overal layout of my paragraphs. This is somehting i feel i have never done before to this extent since i would say that i got up to 12 different drafts and i dont even know if thats the least of them. This is the process i went through to get to my final product.

This picture is just one of hte four pictures i ahd for my indesign layout. This captures the beach while showing what people do there in action. It allows tourists to see how much fun they could have.

I went through this by first looking through picutres in the hardrive that would help me relay my point and show the beauty of the beach. In the end i asked my mom who is a great photographer to see if i could use her work and i got 2 pictures from her little album she made that were of 2 of my friends last year at a surf competition. They were happy that i thought the pictures would be good enough to go on my final draft.

Paul Watson, a Man on the Brink of Insanity.

Paul Watson has a very different way of seeing things that the average person. He uses force when most people would use politics and argument to make sure that what he believes in happens. Paul Watson believes that whale hunting is a brutal crime that should not go unpunished and feels that since it is not looked at as such a big issue he has to take matters into his own hands. The best way to do that for him is coming up with a navy that will protect whales everywhere from the whalers who kill them for food. This “fleet” he controls is called the infamous “Neptune’s Navy.”

Paul Watson is a man who uses very little to do something very big. He has two boats the Hunter and the Farley which are extremely old and the Farley is pretty much floating wreckage. Watson has zealous volunteers who help him protect these waters with items such as stink bombs, water cannons and his favorite weapon, his bow. ( bow is the front of the ship) This quote shows what the bow was used for, “Ramming is his signature tactic, and it is what he and his crew intended to do to the Japanese fleet, if they could find it.” He calls this method of ramming called “Operation Asshole.” This method has scared whalers and it down right should, it is like a modern Trireme which for all those who don’t know was an ancient Greek ship where the bow had a giant ram to sink the other ship. Even though scaring the whalers is a main part of his tactics it is not the only one.

The media, this is how Watson gets the support for his voyages from people like Sean Penn, William Shatner and Orlando Bloom. Watson takes videos of all his journeys and puts them on youtube as well as writing books and articles of his journeys and beliefs. These things have gotten him lots of support from private companies (that generally don’t have anything to do with whaling) and private investors. Just from donations he gets around 2 million dollars annually to upkeep his ships and get supplies. While he gets support from private companies, he has not gone over so well with many countries, “Officials in Iceland, Denmark, Norway, Japan, Canada, and Costa Rica have denounced him.” Even though these countries have denounced him he has never been convicted of any act of violence or piracy.

These tactics have given him split comments from a lot of different people. People have said things like what Peter Singer said, “I think he’s a hero” while Sidney Holt one of the principal architects of the whaling moratorium said, “I think his involvement in all this is an absolute disaster. Almost everything he has been doing has had a blowback for those who want to see an end to whaling.” Even though he might not be liked by everyone he is strongly believes in what he is fighting for and since he has been given a show on the discovery channel, people must think it is interesting which is just another way he uses the media to persuade the general audience towards his side of the whaling argument.

Overall Paul Watson believes very strongly that what he is doing is right. To tell you the truth, I don’t think there is one person that can talk him out of what he is doing because he thinks he is doing such a good job he said this comment, “I will not watch a whale die. I’ve not seen a whale die since I left Greenpeace, in 1977. When we show up whales don’t die.” Watson will be fighting against whaling till the day he days and even when that day comes his legacy will be there and people will take his place to make sure “Neptune’s Navy” is used as the protector of whales and the informant to the public of the world.

Racial Identity

Racial Identity

Language of racial identity is something that happens all the time in the U.S. actually it happens all over the world. Racial identity is done by everyone whether they know it or not, each race has a stereotype which is then looked at when you see that persons skin color, or distinctive physical features. These things change how we see ourselves, how the community sees you and how the world categorizes you.

How we feel about our self is a very big part of how we act. If we feel like we are constantly being judged we may be a little more cautious for certain things. This goes the same for race. People of a certain race even if they are biracial are generally classified based off of there skin color, like a example Marie used was Obama, he is white and black yet most people just know he is black and is considered the first “black” president because of his skin color. Because of how the media and other portray these people black people who may be white or Asian themselves will think of them selves as only black and forget the other racial parts they have. This form of characterization has been happening since people have been alive; this is the reason for slaves and reason for genocide. When believing a certain race may be better like how Arians felt during the Nazi regime, Jews had to pay for their stupidity. Even though we have been moving forward in minority equality the future may have drawbacks because of characterization of biracial people and not accepting what is beneath eye level.

The way we feel about ourselves is closely correlated with how the community sees you and how the media portrays it. Another thing from the “He’s Not Black” article talks about how the media is saying that he is a black man and how he’s the first black man to become president when he is also white. Now I feel that this characterizing will cause things in the future that we don’t see in the present now a days, I feel like there will be more stereotypes based off of race even more than there is now and overall the tensions between races will causes a shift in political power within the government. I also think that with the characterization of skin color and race we will never be able to reach the full potential of equality that a society wishes to make but realistically there is no way that a society as big as the United States could ever be completely equal for everyone, there will always be those that have more power than others and that is how capitalism functions.

Lastly, how the world sees us, which is generally as controlling, overweight and lazy also changes out outlook on things. Our whole government is basically based off of power and being the best at everything it does. Our pop icons such as some that Marie had listed shape how others feel about us which then shapes how we should act. A few examples are how a lot of girls look up to Britney Spears even if she isn’t biracial, people look up to her and even if she is considered a bad example she is the one who portrays America when she goes around the world singing. So even though race is a large part of this discussion we can’t also forget how the new and media shapes our ideas and how we act based off of stereotypes that are set and we feel we have to follow. This is something that Marie does not put into her article yet I feel is something that if addressed and adequately presented would help prove her argument as to how we characterize people off of race.

Overall the discussion on racial identity could be discussed for countless hours and there are so many viewpoints on how it might change our government, our way of life it would be near impossible to write down. But after reading this article I do agree with most of it but I feel that she left out certain topics that she should have addressed to better further the understanding of racial identity we have I this country and how individual people are not to blame but the people in the media who feed this information that may be half true just to sell there magazines, newspapers or to get ratings.

Honors Blog History

Honors Blog

Before we talk about why the Civil War is called the Second American Revolution we have to understand what a revolution is. Dictionary.com states that a revolution is, “An overthrow or repudiation and the thorough replacement of an established government or political system by the people governed.” If we take this quote and show see if it fits what happen with the Civil War we will see if it would be considered the Second American Revolution. During the Civil War there were small rebellions and certain events that were throwing the mutuality between the north and the south into chaos, there was also a new government set up including new political parties and lastly there was fighting between the North and the South for there right to independence.

First, we need to look at the issues that split this great country in two. The main issue that both the north and the south had strong feelings for was Slavery. The north believed it was immoral while the south liked how it provided them a cheap way of labor. People believed in there viewpoint and were willing to use force to show people they meant business, this quote talks about a mob that started trying to spur pro slavery in Lawrence Kansas, “Ignoring the pleas of some leaders, its members smashed the presses of two newspapers, the Herald of Freedom and the Kansas Free State.” This quote is showing how the mob was trying to stop anti-slavery publications so Kansas would become a slave state. 3 days after the Sack of Lawrence anti-slavery believers retaliated in a much more brutal way, “Three days after the Lawrence raid, Brown headed under cover of dark toward Pottawatomie Creek with a half a dozen others…they burst into the cabin of James Doyle, a proslavery man from Tennessee with cutlasses drawn…Before the night was done, two more cabins had been visited and two more proslavery settlers brutally executed.” These attacks were starting to become more vengeful as tensions between the pro slavery and anti-slavery activists started to peek. The mutuality between the North and the South was getting becoming almost none existent at the time where South Carolina Senator attacks Massachusetts senator, “Brooks strode into the Senate after it had adjourned, went up to Sumner, who was seated at his desk, and proceeded to beat him over the head with a cane.” These issues show how the North and the South were becoming completely different entities causing the recession of southern states from the union.

Although there was lots of aggression between these two sides it was not always shown through force, there was a political stand point. After the southern states receded they made there own government sort of like how America made there own government when getting away from Britain. The last straw that forced the South to become the Confederates was the election of Republican Abraham Lincoln, the reason they receded are vast but the main issue was Slavery. This quote shows that recession was the South’s last option to protect there liberty, “Secession seemed the only alternative left to protect the southern equality and liberty. Southern Carolina, which had challenged the federal authority in the nullification crisis, was determined to force the other southern states to act.” South Carolina was the driving force behind the recession of southern states, and because of them this happened, “On December 20, 1860, a popular convention unanimously passed a resolution seceding from the union. The rest of the Deep South followed and on February 7, 1861, the states stretching from Carolina to Texas organized the Confederate States of America and elected Jefferson Davis president.” This recession of the Deep South caused something much bigger. Because of these southern states receding, other states followed so it was pretty much like a game of follow the leader. Certain things then happened causing more states to recede which this quote will explain, “ When Anderson declined the ultimatum Confederate batteries began shelling the fort… 33 hours later Anderson Surrendered…When Lincoln subsequently called for 75,000 volunteers to put down the rebellion, four states in the Upper South, led by Virginia, also seceded. Matters had passed beyond compromise.” With these Upper Southern States the confederacy was a force to be reckoned with and something had to be done.

When the orders were given that the North was going to put down the southern rebellion, Jim Tankham was confident he believed, “The war wont last sixty days,” if he only knew that the war would be a hard fight for the right to have slaves. While this war looked gloom like every where does, this war was different, this war was not going to be any traditional war, it will be a new type with more bloodshed and more lives lost. “ Previous warfare as it had evolved in Europe consisted largely of maneuverings that took relatively few lives… The Civil War, on the other hand, was the first war whose major battles routinely involved more than 100,000 troops.” This change in warfare completely changed tactics and with that changed the overall outlook on the war. People had much better chances of dying and because of this knew that what they were doing was the right thing whether they were fighting for the South or the North. This shows a huge amount of pride and belief in there ideals which is something that wasn’t really seen since the first American Revolution. A quote from Ulysses S Grant after the battle at Shiloh states, “I gave up all idea of saving the Union except by complete conquest.” This shows the determination that was shown by these defenders and how they would willingly give up there lives for there beliefs. This war changed the whole outlook of fighting and the men that were in it changed as well. A Rhode Island soldier says, “ The daily sight of blodd and mangled bodies was common…So blunted their finer sensibilities as almost to blot out all love, all sympathy from the heart.” This shows how this war was not looked at as a war to gain land which is a main reason for wars; it was a war for freedom, liberty, and rights that these people thought they deserved.

Overall the Civil War can be called the second American Revolution for many reasons and truthfully they will probably all be right because of how much this war meant to the people that were in it fighting for what they believed in. This war had a change in politics, a change in warfare and small disputes leading to a bigger event. These are all signs of a revolution, they are almost similar to the events that happened during the first American Revolution and in all reality this should not even be considered a war it should be called the Civil Revolution because of all the things that happened and everything the South did to protect the rights that they thought they deserved.

H20 Project

What are you discovering so far?

I am Discovering how a lot of beaches in San Diego are really dirty but overall the beaches are fairly clean. I am also learning how cleanliness in the beach like with trash closely relates to the pollution that is in the water if there is a small amount of litter there is generally less water pollution. Lastly i am finding it very difficult to find information on tourism that the beaches attract and money that is generated from it.

What surprises you about this project?

What surprises me is the large amount of beaches in San Diego. I knew there was mission beach pacific beach Ocean beach and Imperial beach but each of those have different names and sections theres like 50 or 60 just in San Diego county alone. It just makes me think how many beaches there are in the U.S. since we have water on both he whole entire east and west coasts.

What re your next steps to have a cool product and a great piece of writing?

My next step is to contact the chamber of commerce and also the board of tourism so i can figure how much money these beaches generate and how many people go to these beaches.

Voter Segregation

The process of bringing a certain group of people is first appealing to the interests of that group. The process generally also entails somone to lead while other will follow. Like how this article says that blacks lead the way for their rights and because of that women suffrage was done particurly the same way because of how effective it was. A article I found talks about all three races and how they affected the turnout in this election. They talked about how the black people were a small majority of the large amount of people who voted for Obama. They talk about how whites had a huge percentage who favored Obama and how a large number of those were young people between the ages of 18-30. This election has been a bigger turnout than most elections and because of how a black man ran for office is one of these reasons because it is showing how our nation is stepping forward towards equality and away from racism.

Final product examples for water project

There are many beach ranking systems. What i wanna do that is different is make my own ranking system so that i can rank them on factors that take from many different websites. All three of these beach ranking systems rate the beaches on different things. The first link shows the grading system of the beaches and is very in depth. It has many different things from seaweed to pests that may be at the beach while the second one is about how the beach looks which attracts most people and the overall amount of tourism these areas get. Lastly the third article only talks about how clean the water is and the amount of advisories they get they ranked them either as a good medium or bad which is very simple but gives tourists a idea of beaches they should go to.

I am planning on making my own ranking system and i will be able to use a mix of all these and take certain things to make my own ranking system and rank the top 5 or top 10 beaches in San Diego. I am also hoping to graph these to show how they rank so its also a visual piece.

Part 1

I feel like McCain would be the better presidential candidate but overall I am ok with the results. I feel that security will have to be a big issue because since he is black there are certain groups of people who may want to kill him because of there beliefs on minorities. I am worried that he will pull out of Iraq really fast which will in the long run hurt the Iraq economy as well as allow the terrorists to take over. Some things that I am looking forward to is equality for all people which i think is something that even though its in the constitution not everyone follows those rules and those things should be taken a bit more seriously.

I also believe i have a good amount of civic knowledge and understand fairly well the current events that are happening and the reasons behind them. I cant say this for most of the adults in the US but i feel overall i understand these issues better than most adults.

Part 2

Question: What are the top 5 beaches in San Diego based off of cleanliness of the water, cleanliness of the beach, Tourism and money generated.

Resources that are needed: A graphing program so I can make graphs, reports like heal the bay and the water testing that we are doing in class. I will also need sites talking about money that is generated by tourism and the amount of tourists that visit these beaches every year.

People needed: I will not have to interview anyone to do this. I will have to talk to Brandon and Randy.

For the first week. I will be getting information from the lab tests and make sure I get the information from many different beaches so i can compare them. I will also be going and getting information on the internet and get some background info on all of the popular beaches in San Diego.

Second week I will get be getting information from many different ranking systems and see how they rank there beaches. I will use these as a stepping stone to make my guide and build upon them so that I can get a good system to rank these beaches to the best of my ability and provide a accurate ranking based off 4 different topics.

Third and Fourth week and Fifth week. I will start working on my graphs and make sure I understand how to use the program as well as work on my Web page that I will be posting this on. I will also need to work on my writing portion and get it looked at many different people like my friends and my teachers. Lastly I will need to check all my information and make sure everything is 100% correct and work on getting some pictures to show how these beaches look so the public can get a visual view as well as picturing it through the piece of writing I will be creating.

Research Project Ideas

1. Has beach quality in San Diego getting better or worse

From the articles on healthebay.org there seems like the overall amount of beaches in San Diego are pretty good most of the year but when it rains urban runoff from the streets forces a lot of beacehs to close because of bacteria that is swept into the ocean because of the rain. The Union Tribune page talks about how pollution is getting worse and after the rain season last year with more rain than usual it forced many beaches to close because of how the land is kept up which is something that needs to be fixed if we are to help the oceans get less poluted.

http://www.healthebay.org/assets/pdfdocs/brc/summer/2008/report_print.pdf

http://www.healthebay.org/brc/annual/2007/counties/sd/analysis.asp

http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20050526/news_7m26beach.html

2. Whats the cleanest beach in San Diego? Whats the dirtiest?

"When there's rain, beaches at the mouths of lagoons, rivers and creeks tend to exceed state standards for fecal coliform bacteria." Overall from reports i have read San Diego beaches are much better than beaches in L.A. Country and northern California. Only time they are really bad is when it rains and the quote above gives the reasan for that. So maybe my question should be more about the difference between beacehs here in San Diego and beaches in the rest of California but that will be hard to test water out of San Diego. This may be something i can look up on the internet on many different sources that are reliable and maybe shed a whole different light on beaches in San Diego.

Honors

Jacksonian Democracy

Jacksonian Democracy is very different compared to the Jeffersonian Democracy that came before it. The Jacksonian Democracy focused on the expansion of executive branch powers while the legislative branch was then stripped of there’s. One concept of the Jacksonian Democracy which in my opinion is a very good thing is how it allowed more equal rights not just for wealthy people or land owners but every white individual (Remember during this time black people didn’t have the same rights as whites). This was bases that lead to equality to all races in our country which now a days gives us a huge mix of culture which allows us to be different than any other country, were like one big melting pot as some people put it. There was a party who was against this type of democracy and that part was called the Whig Party probably more because if was the rival of the party Andrew Jackson was apart of which is the Democratic Party. One thing that this new era thought was a good idea was Westward Expansion or as they call it Manifest Destiny. Overall this expansion has been shaped our country and because of it we would not have such an expansive amount of resources and land to be used by the people as well as place for visit like California and Seattle. Overall I believe that the Jacksonian Democracy helped shape the ideas that we are now used to today such as equality and equal representation both in the senate and who we elect to become president. These are things we trust should be defended by our government and I think this style of democracy allowed that to happen.

Acorn or Voter Fraud Now THAT is the Question

Acorn A Company that is Trying to Help Get the Word Out

Acorn a company that is allowing people who have financial difficulties to bounce back and allows people to vote is now being attacked as a conspiracy and linkings to Voter Fraud are not just out of the question.

The Acorn Scandal and Voter Fraud have nothing to do with eachother. Sure there have been cases where Voter Fraud has occured but as many sources have shown it is a very small margin that is generally picked out by the vast number of people who look at the ballots. What it is allowing is for people who have a lower income to have their voices heard which has always been a problem here in America. Now a days the government revolves not around the citizens but the big corperations, which is exactly what the U.S. was not based on. When it comes to McCain talking about Acorn when there are bigger topics is just showing how he is trying to avoid the topic of economy like this CNN reporter wrote. "John McCain is talking about ACORN? Just as a top McCain adviser admitted that his candidate wouldn't campaign on the economy because it's a losing issue, so too it seems that the GOP has made a collective decision to abandon any real discussion of the issues in favor of distortion and distraction." I agree with this reporter and although I support McCain, I think he should focus on the bigger issues.

Overall the issue of voter fraud is really not applicable and just a way to escape from the current issues that actually need to be adressed like the economy the war and overall plans to help the government get back on its feet. These are the big issues not this voter fraud as another writer wrote, "After all, the odds of someone voting fraudulently are about the same as those of an American being struck and killed by lightning." These odds are very slim and the chances of it actually affecting the election is slim to none, so we need to focus more on the main topics not just scapegoats to help draw the publics eye.

Presidential Debate Reflection Number 3

1. "He has been watching ads of Senator McCain's. Let me tell you what I'm actually going to do. I think tax policy is a major difference between Senator McCain and myself. And we both want to cut taxes, the difference is who we want to cut taxes for." One thing we have talked about in class is how the media is a good source of allowing people to believe certain things even if they may not be true. This is a case where one of the commercials against Obama is makign a man believe that Obamas ideas to help the country would be affecting him and his taxes which may or may not be true but are completely based of a unreliable source, a commercial.

2. McCain, Oct. 7:"He voted for nearly a billion dollars in pork-barrel earmark projects, including, by the way, $3 million for an overhead projector at a planetarium in Chicago, Illinois. My friends, do we need to spend that kind of money?" This is true that he did request 3 million dollars yet as this quote from factcheck will prove the statement is not completely correct. "The fact is, however, that the technology Obama requested was not an "overhead projector" such as one might see in a classroom or office."

3. Overall the press and media were talking a lot more about the plus things that Obama did while McCain got the brutal side of it. He was being commented on what he said and just overall the talk was about how Obama did and how he did an overall better job that McCain did which im sure McCain supporters werent to thrilled about.

FactCheck

The Presidential Debates Historical Background

History of the Presidential Debates and how they Help US.

We have no always had presidential debates to allow the public to understand the ideas that our canidates have on certain topics.

This connects to my class because it shows how the presidential debates are not something new but they are something that people have been using for almost 30 to 40 years before they took a break. Before that they even used them in the civil war times like the Lincoln Douglas debates we learned so much about.

I think that these debates are a good idea to allow the people to choose the right canidate they believe can do a good job in office. It allows the media to be a little less of a factor because if all we knew about them was commercials we would be picking a president more for if we liked the song more than the other one rather than the facts that are shown to us through these 2 to 2 and a half our long discussions. So overall the person who came up with these debates was very smart and new it would help our nation.

Internet Democracy

In Todays World the Average Person Lives off the Internet

Published: January 3, 2007

The internet has allowed people to expereince the wealth information that people would not be able to get in old days. All the news almost every piece of work both literary and open speech are able to be seen and read just by a click of the mouse. This article talks about the preservation of Internet Democracy as well as what it is.

This connects to our project because it answers the question on Randies DP as well as show us the kids who are growing up in the day and age of technology to see how the internet affects us and how people in the days where computers werent invented got there information on a day to day basis.

Personally I find the internet to be an invalluable tool of not just information but allows us to open our horizons. It allows us to think outside the box and learn things not only at school but learn certain essential tools that will help us later in life.

Reflection

Personally I think the overall product of our newspaper front page was done fairly well and a lot of time was put into it. Some things that reflect this hard work is the article I wrote about the Nebraska Act which was a major part of the Lincoln Douglas debates. Plus the demographic shows who would be affected by this act and how there would’ve have been more slave states rather than Free states causing the balance to be uneven. Another thing I contributed was my Photoshop picture I made of Lincoln and Douglas in front of the American flag. The last thing I contributed to the group was how much I worked on the Indesign. I went and stayed in for lunch to even do it. I tried really hard on it and made sure it was the highest quality I could do. I tried getting help from Randy and picked his brain for ideas on how to make it look more physically appealing. In the end I think it turned out really well.

Some things I think I need to change are the small things like looks and the lines I made. I also need to work on the spacing of the articles and the overall presence the piece has as the reader looks at it. I would also try to make the Photoshop thing I made a bit more historically accurate like Lincoln being taller and the right flag in the back not the one from present day. Plus I think I would make my headline a bit stronger and make sure all the headlines weren’t done so quickly and as a group thought about how they should be written because that’s what attracts people to read your article so it is very important to have a good headline.

Overall I think I worked very hard on this project yet I know in the first two days I had a tough time staying focused making it harder for me to get good evidence for my my article which was basically what a news article is all about. When I was working on the Indesign program I thought it was a lot of fun so I would work hard and made sure I used my time wisely to make it the best it could be. I got people input and asked Randy on certain parts that I didn’t know what to do and any opinions he had about it or ideas on how to make it look better or appeal to the audience. On the last day, Monday at the end of the first hour of work time I thought I was done so I was just talking instead of doing my work. After I had Jacob and Randy came out to look at it I noticed how much had to be done since Randy just went and said like 10 different things we had to do that would make our project look a lot better and personally I think he right. I think it looks a lot better and draws the reader in better after I did what he said. One thing I think would have helped out a lot is if we printed out a copy first to see how it would look then go and fix any mistakes there would be back on the computer and that would be the final draft. That would have stopped a lot of the spacing issues I had when I printed out my final draft this time.

The Debates, Past and Present

Part 1
Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas had to completely different ideas on slavery. Douglas believed in popular sovereignty while Lincoln wanted slavery to be abolished completely but did not believe in equal rights for blacks and whites. A quote from Douglas tries to explain that if slavery is to be abolished it should have been abolished when the constitution was written. “Uniformity in the local laws and institutions of the different States is neither possible nor desirable. If uniformity had been adopted when the Government was established, it must inevitably have been the uniformity of slavery everywhere, or else the uniformity of Negro citizenship and Negro equality everywhere.”

Douglas thought the Nebraska Act will allow people to pick if they anted slavery in there territory or not but this would lead to them becoming slave territories because of the polls that were giving to him showed that more people would vote for slavery rather than against it. This quote is Douglas talking about what the Nebraska Act will do. "It is the true intent and meaning of this act not to legislate slavery into any State or Territory, or to exclude it there from, but to leave the people thereof perfectly free to form and regulate their domestic institutions in their own way, subject only to the federal constitution." While Abraham believed that it should be the federal government that steps in and solves this problem, more people at that time believed in slavery even in the north so the public favored Douglas over Lincoln.

Part 2

The Democrats and the Republicans have very similar ideas in most areas but some places they differ at are foreign affairs and our economy. Both have different plans to make our country better but we will not be able to see if they will work till they are in office and implement the plans they are talking about. After watching the presidential and reading about the vice presidential debates, it has shown me that you understand more of what’s happening and both sides of the argument if you actually watch it rather than reading sources that may be bias and wont give all of the information but just the information that lets the person they want to win to seem like they did amazing while they make the other person look like he lost which in maybe another source it may be switched because he is bias as well just for the opposite person.

Demographics...

Some questions I have about demographics are how do they attain all this information. Do they use online sources or do they go to peoples houses? Other than that they make things fairly straight forward so I do not have any other questions.

This demographic showed me how there really are more boys then girls in San Diego. There is a lot more from the ages 1 to 50 but after that the number starts switching and there are more girls that makes me think... do girls live longer than guys and if they do... what causes them to live so long. Maybe girls are holding out on us and know ways to live longer but they just don not want to share it with us.

If you wanna see the demographic click here

Segregation Abolished? Or Just Hidden From Us...

Brown vs. Board of Education

The case Brown vs. Board of Education which ended on May 17th 1954, was a case that changed a major part of U.S. society. The supreme courts decision in this case resulted in the abolishment of educational segregation of African Americans. During the case the Supreme Court used the process Judicial Review to reconsider the law that banned White and Black students from going to school together. The law that this case was challenging was set by the Plessy vs. Fergusson case in 1896. All nine justices agreed that the law was unconstitutional so the law was overturned.

The first case that was seen by the Supreme Court about black rights was the Dred Scott vs. Sanford case; Dred Scott sued the wife of his owner after the owner suddenly died. This caused uproar between the Slave and Free states. The free states believed that he should be allowed freedom while the slave states believe otherwise. The outcome of this case was the Supreme Court throwing it out on the grounds that black people didn’t have the same rights that white people had and one of those rights was the ability to sue another person.

In modern times segregation is not as big of an issue as it was during the Civil War but it is still palpable in certain regions of the United States. Surveys show there are more black people who live in the south than the north and there are less black people who enroll in top notch high schools and colleges. One article showing statistics on the amount of black people going to school in the south stated; “
In 1991, 39% of black students in Southern states attended schools that were majority white; in 2003, only 29% did.” This shows that things have changed and are starting to revert to the old ways of legal segregation and social racism. It shows us that the problem with educational racism is still apparent in our time and segregation is not gone, and though it may not be as bad as it was after the Civil War things need to change. One of my partners for this project: Will Schrenkeisen, believes that with slavery abolished people looked for a new source of cheap labor, and came up with sweatshops. In America there are many laws about appropriate pay and worker rights that are not present in every country. He believes without slave labor we have shifted from slavery to the exploitation of citizens in other countries like China and Vietnam.

Dred Scott Case

The Dred Scott Case was about a man and his wife who ran away to the north and sued there dead owner for there freedom. They had the grounds that while traveling with there owner they passed through both free and slave states showing that they are in that case free. The case took eleven years to go through the court system until it finally reached the Supreme Court. It got thrown out of court by the Supreme Court on the grounds that slaves do not have the same rights as citizens thus they can not sue someone for there freedom, only someone who is a U.S. citizen can sue. This caused a tension between the north and the south which some believe could have been one of the major events to cause the Civil War to happen. It caused two precedents one for the people who believed slavery was a bad thing and shouldn’t be allowed and the people who were for slavery. The people who were against slavery thought that this was just the begging and because of this black people will be able to win there rights in a court of law. The people who were for slavery thus believed that this case just further showed them that blacks are not like them, they are different thus do not have the same rights as they do.

Reflection

I was most Proud
of my A.I.G post because I give my ideas on how to fix this problem and bring the economy back from its slump.

Some things I have to improve is my use of pictures. I never use pictures to help as evidence and I generally always use the same source like Washington Post or New York Times. Lastly I need to get peoples opinions and make sure I read the articles more in depth.

To connect our blogs we should have a weekly discussion with 4 or 5 people and we go and talk about each others blog and what we think about them. Then later that night we have to write about something that we have learned or something that interested us during the discussion and link that persons blog to your own.

Obama Nation... A Lie???

‘The Obama Nation’

Edited On: September 25th 2008
Published: August 12, 2008

Fact check

This article talks about why the writer wrote "The Obama Nation" and that he believes in what he wrote.

This connects to class because I looked up this book on factcheck.org and I was informed that this book not a proper place to get info on Obama. A few quotes showing that he says things that may not be true are, "Corsi claims that Obama "could claim to be a citizen of Kenya as well as of the United States." But the Kenyan Constitution specifically prohibits dual citizenship." Thats just one, heres another example, "Corsi relies on claims from one of Obama's "closest" childhood friends to "prove" that Obama once was a practicing Muslim, without revealing that the witness later said he couldn't be certain about his claims and confessed to knowing Obama for only a few months."

Personally, I cant believe that this person would write a book full of lies about a president without being convicted or something like that. Because of what I have read on fact check most of the it is lies and gave Obama a bad image. It was a best seller by the New York Times.

A.I.G Going Bankrupt???

Fed Readies A.I.G. Loan of $85

Billion for an 80% Stake

By MICHAEL J. de la MERCED and ERIC DASH
Published: September 16, 2008

Overall this article is talking about how A.I.G is having to get bailed out by the feds because without it the largest insurance company will go out of buisness and affect buisnesses and normal people world wide.

This relates to class because it is part of the stock market drop and how because of a large amount of banks and big companys folding is lowering the DOW and causing the government to bail out all the companies that help the country.

I think they should let A.I.G fold and let a smaller insurance company or one that is maybe not as big but still a well known one to take most of the people A.I.G has or split it up between a lot of companies. Then they should allow those companies to use government money to make more networks to they can control the flow of people and hopefully with this it will stable out and increase the amount of companies based in the US hightening the DOW and maybe bringing the stock market to what it was. But just giving money will jsut cause inflation in the U.S. and make the stock market fall even farther.

Russia States Reason for Invading Georgia

Putin: Russia had to invade

Georgia

writer: Not given
September 11th 2008

This article is talking about why Putin invaded the small country of Georgia and that his reasons were to stop revolt in Russian Nations and not to try and annex it back into Russia.

This connects to class because it talks about life liberty and the pursuit of happiness. They are making sure there liberty is intact by making sure there isnt revolt in there own country but they are taking liberty from Georgia at the same time because they are trying to invade them.

To me I think they are doing this to show people that Russia is still a powerful country and not be taken for granted. They have the power to control the countries around them and can feel free to use that power at any time.

Federalist verse anti-Federalist

McCain calls for limited roll in U.S.
Schools
By: Sam Dillon
September 9, 2008; New York Times

It talks about McCains plan for public schools and Obamas plans and how they differ.

This connects to class because it what McCain is doing where he thinks the federal government should play a smaller role in education but still have guidelines while Obama differes and believes they should do more to make sure that the No Child Left Behind act is enforced and they know what is happening in public schools in the U.S. This shows the Federalist which is Obama in this instance compared to McCain who is anti Federalist right now, this shows both sides of the arguement and good reasans to both.

Personally I think it should be half and half. I think the government should step in but shouldnt watch everything that is happenig in the school. Theys also shouldnt give teachers more money for doing certain things because those teachers will just do what they have to get the most money possible.

McCain Willing Fighting for Office

To G.O.P., McCain Issues Call for Change

Adam Nagourny
September 4, 2008; New York Times

Overall this article is talking about how McCain is trying to change things in Washington. He wants to try and take the people who think of themselves over there country out of office and change the government to be more for the people. He also says how he will go against his own party if that is stopping him from making the right choice for his country.

This connects to class because it is just like John Locke's idea of Life, Liberty and Property. McCain wants to make help the country be more for the people rather than for the greedy people who are making all the decisions in D.C.

Personally, I think John McCain will do a lot of good for our country, he seems like a very intelligent man with good morals. I think the will allow change in the government and try to stop corruption which is so common.

Mayor of Detroit Pleads Guilty and Resigns

Detroit Mayor Pleads Guilty, Resigns

By: Susan Saulny
September 4th 2008
The New York Times

The article is about the mayor of Detroit resigning so that he is not charged for lying under oath.

It connects to class because it is relating to Hobbs way of thinking. He is resigning to protect himself from persecution and even though he loses his job he doesn't have to go to court for breaking the law.

Personally I think he should not have lied in the first place but, to save himself from being persecuted what he did was a good idea.
